Best songwriter of all times

Today I was listening to music while cooking and cleaning, and put on my Best of Jim Croce CD. It is so full of great songs, and it occurred to me. No one has ever done a cover, except his son, that I know of. His family must own rights.

After listening to most of the cd, I also realized what a visual his songs create. Don't Mess Around with Jim...its like you are in the bar watching the fight. Roller Derby Queen...who else could make you fall in love with someone who "might be nasty and might be fat". Operator...you can see the man in an old phone booth, pining over a lost love. Could he possibly be the best song writer of all time?

Croce remains among my favorite singer/songwriters. His music never feels 'dated'.....huge since he died in 1973. He does a killer cover of "Old Man River"....the arrangement suits his voice perfectly....and the song was written for basso.

Great cover. I'll always love "Time in a bottle". One of the prettiest love songs ever.

... I wouldn't necessarily title this "best songwriter of all time"... I could argue that haha.

Mr. Willie is an amazing songwriter; not just for himself, but for others. He wrote "Crazy" back in the day...there is a complete list on WIKI and many titles you will recognize recorded by other artists...if nothing else, he is certainly prolific.

My favorite (mostly) is Phil Vassar....check out his "Greatest Hits" CD and hear who he's been writing for....

I have Phil's Greatest Hits...love it.... As far as songwriting goes, I look for an artist who's autobiographical, raw and deep. I love the artists who write for them and not for radio airplay or chart success.

Oh true story, I never thought about that. I've always been really into the songwriters who go over your head I guess haha.

Someone I like but I can't get any sense out of a lot of their songs is Sheryl Crow. A lot of her music is just like, "Huh?" I don't have any clue what a lot of it is about, but I do understand the general mood of it

Like you're thinking "Yup, you were clearly on drugs when you wrote that!"... been there. I've never paid any attention to her songs, I don't like her voice or style. A lot of alternative, especially in the 90's, songs are like "HUH!?" for me... but usually I find interviews with the artist or something and have a lightbulb moment. I like songs that have really deep intricate lyrics but there is a theme and a purpose behind them.

The only one of her albums I have that I can follow/understand all the songs is her latest one, 100 Miles To Memphis...

Miranda, you should take her up on that. She is really good at analyzing lyrics.

I love doing it too. I am paying so much more attention to lyrics now than I have in the past. I like listening to the song and reading the lyrics to really try and understand what it means, or at least what it means to me.

It's like I'm a hermit or something and my life hobby is analyzing people on the internet...as soon as someone gives me something to work with... that is how I picture myself lurking out of the darkness...into your brain.

She has a bunch of other songs I just really don't get. But some of them I do get and I really relate to
